First EU Methane Reduction Regulation

A regulation to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector was approved by the EU Parliament this week. The regulation applies to all 27 member states and will be implemented in the upcoming months.

The approved regulation establishes a carbon removals certification framework for the oil, coal and gas sector, and importers are required to produce production reports and fulfil other requirements starting from 2027.

The new legislation extends to carbon storage for a 35-year period, as well as to agricultural carbon framing activities for 5 years.

Additionally, a revised regulation was approved setting a new emissions threshold for heavy-duty vehicles.
