EU Regulation for Carbon Removal Framework

A tentative regulation has been approved by the European Parliament and EU state members to establish a certification framework for carbon removals. This framework is intended to further EU’s efforts towards achieving its nationally determined contributions (NDCs) of reducing greenhouse gas emissions outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement. It is anticipated that this provisional agreement will be formally approved before the EU elections in June.

The framework covers carbon farming activities that lasts at least 5 years, as well as permanent carbon storage achieved industrial technology that lasts at least 35 years. The EU Commissions will create a registry for carbon removals within four years after the framework comes into effect.
