COP28 Updates

COP28 Disagreements Continue After the Release of the First Draft

COP28 is coming to an end and an agreement regarding fossil fuels has yet to be reached. Many countries disapproved of the draft agreement that came out on Monday and were disappointed by it. The Marshall Islands’ climate envoy dismissed the document as a “meaningless wish list” that fails to address the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting warming to 1.5℃. Germany did not support the draft, due to its lacking a firm commitment to the phasing out of fossil fuels, which is one of the main demands of the EU and numerous countries that are at risk due to climate change. Although the summit is scheduled to end early on Tuesday, it appears that negotiations will last longer than planned, due to disagreements. The summit faced challenges reaching a consensus, and concerns were raised about potential objections from major oil producers, such as Saudi Arabia, impacting the text, as the final decisions at COPs require unanimous agreement.
