20-30GW of Added Gas Capacity in Germany

Germany needs to add 20-30GW of new hydrogen-ready gas-fired capacity by the 2030s. Out of this, 10GW and 500MW will be tendered this year, with installation scheduled for 2030. Another 10-20GW of hydrogen-ready gas-fired capacity, with 2/3 designated as peaking plants, is promised to be added around 2028, but no further information has been provided.

These extended timelines are said to create room for failure in achieving 2030 targets, as they might delay investments, particularly given the lack of details.

Germany is expecting to phase out coal-fired capacity by 2030, despite the legal deadline being 2038.
